Teri DeSario

Teri DeSario grew up in Miami, Florida to the sounds of music. With vivid memories such as lying in the grass on sweltering summer afternoons listening to the symphonies of cicadas, learning the mantras of ocean waves chanting the shorelines, the steady rhythm of Ravel’s “Bolero,” to which every Saturday she and her mother cleaned house, Frank Sinatra spinning on her audiophile father’s record player, and later her regular late night forays to the Rancher Hotel where she was creatively nourished by Miami’s jazz greats, she can’t remember a time when music was not her constant companion and guide.

At 13 she began studying classical voice at Barry University. At 18 she started her professional career in the coffee houses, hotels, and bars of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. She studied jazz voice at the renowned University of Miami, but restless to sing, she withdrew in order to dedicate herself fully to writing and performing. After many years of touring internationally, television appearances and eight solo albums for labels such as Sony, Casablanca, Epic, Warner Brothers, and Word Records, and she earned her MFA in Vocal Performance from the progressive California Institute of the Arts in 1995 and joined the faculty the following year as adjunct professor for Vocal Performance. Teri lived in Hamburg, Germany between 1997 and 2012 and began directing in 1998. She was the director of the Gospelchor Blankenese from 2008 – 2012, where she introduced various streams of contemporary American gospel music to the Hamburg public. She appeared in jazz clubs and festivals and gave concerts throughout northern Germany. She currently divides her time between Hamburg and Miami.

Some of the highlights of her career include the cult status disco hit produced by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, “Ain’t Nothin’ Gonna Keep Me from You,” two gold records, her first being for her duet with guest artist KC from KC and the Sunshine Band “Yes, I’m Ready,” her second for her Japanese release, “Overnight Success,” a grammy nomination for her second contemporary christian album “Voices in the Wind.”

It was her work in that genre which most deeply impacted her life:

“In the realm of inspirational music I can most authentically combine the two most important themes in my life, spirituality and the healing activity of the dedicated human voice. To me, singing is “Sunday service.” There is nothing more that I love to do. Singing is the most potent way I know to express divine Love. My mission in life is to touch and inspire people to experience that Love. If my singing can open people’s hearts in that way then I am fulfilled.”

Teri lives in Miami where she continues to perform in various venues, teach voice, coach artists, support Waldorf education, and lead workshops in finding and releasing the True Voice.
