IF I AM GAY, WILL I GO TO HELL WHEN I DIE? CAN I BE GAY AND SERVE GOD?
Rev. Chris Jackson, Senior Minister
First off, Unity does not believe in a literal hell as destination of reward or punishment upon death. We believe that hell, like heaven, is an experience of life in the here and now. Both states of mind are the results of beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that we have adopted.
Second, Unity believes that all people are children of God, including gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender individuals and those who question their sexual orientation or “labeling”. All are free to serve and be served by God and all are loved unconditionally.
While social norms have created religious dictates that have caused oppression, suffering, guilt and shame, Unity proudly proclaims the equality of all people and we celebrate diversity and the unique expression of God that each of us brings to life.
Personally, I will tell you that God is in no way remotely interested in punishing anyone for being an authentic, loving human being and that you have every right to serve God with dignity, grace, confidence and gratitude!
Rev. Elizabeth Longo, Associate Minister
God is love and love is the very fiber of your being. God doesn't judge or condemn. In a "twinkling of an eye" one can free one's mind from thoughts and beliefs of being unlovable or unwanted. Open the heart to the love of God, as a moment to moment reality and you will free yourself from the prisons of suffering.
Heaven and hell are states of consciousness. Unity does not believe in hell or condemnation. God loves all of its creation. Regardless of your sexual orientation know that God loves you and that you are an essential part of all creation.
Once you realize you are a divine being made in the image and likeness of your creator you will then understand that you are here to be a beneficial presence by sharing your unique gifts. Love yourself fully in your own unique, colorful expression. Love all, serve all.
