A Historic Day At Unity - Free Same-Sex Marriages
Saturday, Jan. 10th, 2015
Unity on the Bay opened our doors today to offer a free same-sex mass marriage ceremony to couples looking to get married for the first time in Florida, or couples who wanted to renew their wedding vows. It was a beautiful and historic occasion which Unity on the Bay was honored and proud to be a part of. The sense of love and compassion was intense in the room as Rev. Chris Jackson and Rev. Elizabeth Longo used the power of spoken word to officiate the ceremony and members of the Unity on the Bay Choir, and Music Ministry, added to the occasion with live music. Couples came from as far as Georgia to get married at Unity on the Bay on this special day. Juan del Hierro, the Director of Ministry Empowerment at Unity on the Bay, also joined in to renew his vows with his husband Tom. Juan and Tom are also named plaintiffs in the prevailing Florida lawsuit which helped lift the ban on same-sex marriages in Florida. Unity on the Bay was also blessed to have Karina Iglesias renew her vows. Karina has been part of Unity's choir, has been a guest singer during Unity's Sunday Celebration Services, and is well known for her signing talents showcased during her time as a contestant on the popular TV show "The Voice".
In the words of Rev. Chris Jackson “Unity on the Bay teaches that all people are expressions of God and entitled to equal rights regardless of race, gender, gender expression or sexual orientation. We are a diverse spiritual community, and we are proud to be a part of this momentous occasion by offering this service to our community.”
